Dennis Fijalkowski
Dennis Fijalkowski has worked in the energy and natural resources business for thirty-five years. He started his career with the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, Michigan's largest conservation organization, where he was a key person in enacting Michigan's bottle bill in 1976. He was also instrumental in drafting and enacting many legislative proposals of the 1970's, such as the Michigan Wetlands Act and the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Act.
In the early 1980's, Dennis was an energy and natural resources consultant to the Michigan Senate, advising both parties on energy, environmental and natural resources issues. He considers his most important contribution to be his research on oil and gas royalties to the State of Michigan from drilling on state-owned lands. The proposal Dennis developed, raising royalty rates paid to the state by oil and gas exploration and drilling companies from 12.5 percent to 16.66 percent of value, was passed by the legislature and became law in 1981. This change has allowed the state to purchase tens of thousands of additional acres of recreational land since.
In 1982, Dennis co-founded the Michigan Wildlife Habitat Foundation, which later became the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy. During his more than 27 years as executive director, the organization became the leader in wildlife restoration in Michigan. In 1998, he led Conservancy supporters in a campaign to build the Bengel Wildlife Center in Bath, Michigan.
Dennis has been a tireless proponent of energy conservation, wildlife restoration and the promotion of social sustainability throughout his career. He has earned master's degrees in both wildlife ecology and forestry from Michigan State University.
